Factors Associated with the Building of an Airstrip

There are several factors influencing cost considerations of an airstrip.

The location, size, usage and level of infrastructure are all components that need to be considered with these building costs.

In all the cases above one must also consider that there needs to be water present to build these runways.  What happens in those instances where no water is present? What then? What happens when a functional runway is required to take a workforce into a remote location on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. These situations affect mining exploration companies that do not have the budget to build such a runway.

One must also consider the time factor associated with such a construction at an average cost of 300 000 to 500 000 USD per kilometer. Additional costings such as earthworks, drainage systems, hauling and compaction need to also be considered. Not to forget that this could also become a lengthy period with hidden variables causing undue delay in the construction.

What about considering building a portable/relocatable runway? A runway that has been pre-engineered, and features rapid deployment suitable for dealing with emergency and critical situations, such as disaster relief, military, mining, exploration and more.

Have you ever imagined in building/construction a runway 40m wide x 3000m in less than 6 months?

With Composite Base Rig Mats it is possible – interlocking pre-engineered runway mats – with warrantees of up to 30 years. The top-end Aluminium Aircraft AM2 landing mat can be preproduced in a state-of-the-art production facility with the capacity of producing 120, 000m2 in roughly 3 months from order to dispatch.

These mats can be deployed anywhere in the world, their existence since the early 1940’s have had several modifications and the recent redesign of lighter panels, still keeping the thickness, strength and length the same allows for easier air transportability. In addition, these panels are now 1/3 of the weight of those that were used in the 1940’s.

The latest modification to these matting panels that is labelled AM2PM and features significant upgrades and enhancements suitable for use in long term projects. The full length panel remains at 3.6m long and the half panel 1.8m long, the matting being installed in a bricklaying formation providing optimum strength.

The AM2PM aircraft landing mats features an impressive load factor of 310 MPa & Psi: 44961.7. Notably, all products follow the BS EN 755 specification. The surface offers a non-slip epoxy coating available in more than 20 different colors, and the first Aircraft Landing Mat of its kind with a reversible traction surface that comes as an optional extra version.  Once the traction of the runway has worn off the entire AM2PM Aircraft Landing Mat, can be rapidly taken apart through the use of critical keylocks, and the runway surface can double its life span. This innovative design will enhance operational requirements. The weak points associated with the overlapping welding stress factors (as per the design from 1940’s) has been reinvented allowing for a reversible aircraft landing mat.

Once your project is completed simply take the panels apart and store until it is required next. This innovative system will enhance rapid deployment the world over.  We have constructed a base cost from US$250/m2 that includes the matting with a 360-degree interlocking system. The system can be upgraded by reversible panels (epoxy coating on both sides of the  mats), z-anchors around the perimeter, and recessed pegging system that does not puncture the landing surface.

For ease of shipping/installation Aircraft Landing Mats offers you various packing configurations to optimize rapid deployment.  A consideration is that the unutilized containers can also be converted into aircraft hangers, storage and accommodation facilities.
